Go wild!

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive.”

Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth

Let’s get away, really away, and experience the true freedom of the hills in the Alps, Alaska or somewhere else wild and beautiful.

I love the independence of traveling by foot with everything you need, and nothing you don’t, on your back, ready for what may come, able to follow your feelings and go, or stop, where you want (of course following what safety and ethics require).

These trips will give you the basics of independent wilderness travel and a chance to take your skills to some of the wildest places on Earth. Scroll down to see specific trips to help you go wild!

Intro to wild camping

Learn what it takes to travel in the wilds with confidence.

We’ll cover the basics and give you expert tips for sleeping in the wilderness with or without a tent, with or without a stove, but definitely with confidence.

You’ll learn what to bring, what not to bring, how to pack and carry it, how to choose a campsite, tips for backcountry gourmet, staying warm, dry and safe, and upholding necessary sanitation, Leave No Trace and other etiquette. And so much more.

Overall, you’ll simply have a great time embracing the wild and being embraced by it.

Ready to get out under the stars?

Let's go camping!
  • We can start with a one-night trip, but if you have time, it’s even better to go for two nights.

We’ll meet in the morning and go over gear, how to pack your pack and get an overview of the route. Then we’ll head into the wilds and make our way to our campsite. Along the way, we’ll discuss techniques for carrying heavy loads, anticipating weather conditions and how to select a good place to camp.

At camp, we’ll set up, cook the most delicious meal ever and go over tips for cleaning and securing your site for the night. The next morning, we’ll enjoy the amazing feeling of waking up already in beautiful nature without even taking a step.

We’ll start our second day with the most delicious coffee ever (ok, maybe not) and breakfast, then break down camp, pack up and enjoy walking through the dew as we watch the warm morning light push the shadows down the mountain faces across the valley. If we’re lucky enough to be going for a second night, we do more of the same the second day, but in more detail with more incredible views and even more confidence.

Before we reach the final trailhead and say farewell, we’ll discuss tips for unpacking, cleaning and storing your gear so it’s ready to go the next time you are.

  • We’ll go somewhere in Switzerland for these trips. Depending on the time of year, trail and weather conditions and your travel plans, it will either be in the Jura mountains near Lac Leman or in the Alps. I have a few favorite spots in mind that will blow you away.

  • We’ll talk gear before we go to be sure we have everything we need when we reach the trailhead. Ideally, you will use your own camping gear so you can get used to using it in the wilds. But it’s also expensive to get kitted out, and you may want some advice or experience before purchasing all the stuff. I have some items you can rent or borrow if you have a gap you need to fill.

  • Depending on where you are traveling from, it might make sense to arrive close to the trailhead the night before we start the trip. We can discuss options for that when you book. These accommodations would be your responsibility to reserve and are not included in the trip price.

Alaska and the Arctic

I lived in Alaska for many years, including in the far-north Arctic, and I’m dying to get back to its raw expanses of wild. Alaska is basically the size of western Europe with fewer people than Zurich and one-third the kilometers of roads as Switzerland.

We can get really lost there, in the good way, feeling small and constantly in awe, our senses de-tuned from the noise of modern life and tuned to the sights, smells and sounds of life in one of the world’s most vast and last unspoiled wildernesses. Moose, bear, Dall sheep and salmon, caribou, halibut and some of the most genuine people you’ll ever meet.

I have a million trips I still want to take there. If you’re game, tell me what you want to do and we can try to make it happen. Hiking in Denali National Park, the Brooks Range, or among the 1000 year old cedars in the Tongass? Rafting or packrafting in the Arctic? Exploring America’s least explored national park?

Of course Alaska is on your bucket list. Trips there take time and logistics. If you have the time, I can manage the logistics. Get in touch and let’s see how to make it happen.
